As a film journalist for the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, Peter Arthur Straubinger had covered many interesting stories, but none caught his personal attention like that of people who claimed that they did not need  or have a desire to consume food anymore, our cherished molecules of mammalian nutrition. WTF?

 

His documentary takes us into this rarefied world of people who do not eat (or at least very very very little) and explores how this might be possible.  According to his research  molecule-based energy from food only accounts for about 77% of human energy, leaving the generation of the rest a mystery.

  

Could that extra human energy be from other sources of power, like the Sun, or perhaps from other peope or Nature?  Could this mysterious energy source be what many through the ages have called various names like Qi Qong, Orgone, Elan Vitale, or the Life Force? How might it work?

Over five years in the making, we discuss with the filmmaker these questions, as well as the swirling controversy his film has generated in the sceptics circles.

Twisted radio takes on a whole new meaning with research from scientists at USC.  They passed each beam – which carried its own independent stream of data – through a “spiral phase plate” that twisted each radio beam into a unique and orthogonal DNA-like helical shape. A receiver at the other end of the room then untwisted and recovered the different data streams.   The researchers, led by electrical engineering professor Alan Willner of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, reached data transmission rates of 32 gigabits per second across 2.5 meters of free space in a basement lab at USC. Not bad, much faster than normal radio transmissions..perhaps SETI explorers looking for ET would have better luck looking for more ‘twisted’ signals..

Mrs. Future and I share our thoughts and feelings of Bliss Camp 2014 and talk to one of the artist musicians, Hannah Thiem, from last weekend’s musical tribal event at the beautiful Camp Navarro, in sunny Mendocino County.  It’s a big week for Mars Exploration as two spacecraft approach the Red Planet.

We then spend most of the show talking with visionary attorney Douglas Gillies about the future of the legal profession, as we hurtle in a new world of rapidly changing boundaries and needs.  Douglas speaks  as a biographer of UN pioneer Robert Mueller.  Assistant Secretary-General for 40 years, his ideas about world government, world peace and spirituality led to the increased representation of religions in the UN, especially of New Age Movement. He was known by some as “the philosopher of the United Nations.”

Douglas speaks of the transition from competition to collaboration as we move to a global world view and his efforts to educate  businessmen, lawyers, and other professionals in creating such win/win scenarios.

We had a fun morning in the KSCO studios, chatting about robots with Rosie, who has been exploring the topic all month with the morning commute traffic audience.  Now it’s our turn.  We brought to the studio some fun toys, including the personable smart phone driven RoboMe, a FLIR infrared imager camera for the iPhone, and Google Glass.  Hulu, the station dog, was a bit wary of the robot, and took a pretty mean thermal image with the FLIR iPhone attachment!

And because we were the last guests of the week on the “Good Morning Monterey!”  we were recruited  to sing the Mony Python song, “Always Look at the Bright Side of Life!” with the KSCO staff as our signoff.  Enjoy!
