Dr. Future News - Tesla Museum, Print your own gun, California Free College Textbooks, $99 Supercomputer, Earth's personal transponder sound, Facebook Spying, Celebrating Banned Book Week

Dr. Future News 10.02.12

This show marks the first one recorded in the offical KOMY studio, a fully functioning radio/podcast studio now located inside the classic control room of KSCO radio in Santa Cruz!. A studio within a control room…it was also the first time KSCO and KOMY were broadcasting two live shows simultaneously, in studios right next to each other!  Each with their own mics, board, phone lines, call-ins, and next week, Skype lines!

As KOMY does not yet have the advertiser base of it’s big sister, KSCO, we had way more time to discuss our stories this week, each with it’s own length, allowing us (your storyteller newsfolks) to set the pace more organically… yes, all stories are now organic on this radio show/podcast/transmission, or whatever you want to call it.  As Santa Cruzians, we like that, but don’t worry, we didn’t try to stretch a classic 3-minute short news piece into a feature length documentary, as  ‘there’s a universe in every moment’ kind of thing :-)

A quite pleasant surprise was a call-in from none other than our favorite partial cyborg, Dave Blackburn in sunny Santa Monica, where we discussed some of today’s stories (i.e. Tesla museum, 3D printing of guns) and explored his latest cyborgian adventure, looking at what bionic feet are now available. Knowing Dave, he’d like to try all the new options, including a new Icelandic model with proprioception balancing..kind of like the Segway of bionic feet.

We had a lot of fun making today’s show and we hope you enjoy it too!

Dr. Future News - 3D Mars Live, Fibonacci Solar Panels, Crowd Funding Ignites, Ecstatic Brain Scanning, Bacteria have friends too, the Brains behind the Mind.

 Dr. Future News 9.25.12

Welcome to the Dr. Future News, where we do our best to keep you abreast of some really interesting stories this week.  It’s pretty cool, for example that the NASA scientists are using consumer 3D glasses from Nvidia to roll around on Mars aboard the Curiousity rover.   It used to be that NASA drove the development of tech, with inventions as lithium batteries, wireless sensors, to panoramic photography. Now, consumer tech is helping to drive the space program, literally!  And in that realm there are rising new inventors, such a 13-year old Aidan Dwyer, who has created a new kind of solar panel, based on his observation of trees.

We also take a look at the world of crowd funding, where more and more people are finding the money for financing their personal projects and dreams.  Just this week, Mrs. Future (Sun Marian) spoke on the topic at a Film School in San Francisco, as a way to finance your media productions. It is an amazing up-and-coming field.

Our reporting on the social nature of bacterial colonies and the significance of brain evolution in understanding our minds were also fun to make and share with you, not to mention the report from an intrepid New Scientist journalist inside an fMRI machine while high on MDMA.  So enjoy, and you’ll hear from us next week in our new home on KOMY in Santa Cruz!

Dr. Future News - The Future of Work, Tweeting Earthquakes, Superorganism, 3D Printer Games, Driverless California

Listen now to Dr. Future News 9.11.12

Aah, back from Burning Man with minds inspired,  and time to share with you some exciting new stories.

“The Future of Work” is a deep topic, which we begin to explore with this show; hopefully we will spark a few neurons in you on this most important subject.  A new use for Twitter has surfaced - tracking earthquakes as they occur in realtime!  Seems like they can do this faster than the official USGS sensors…go figure.

Hmmm, lesseee, human powered sensors that let us know about Earth changes now..This brings up the context of humanity reorganizing itself via the global brain forming, thanks to the internet, and beyond the brain, the species super organism.

There is a specific pattern being uncovered at the leading edges of biological science that reveals the steps by which fragmented pieces of cosmic material coalesce into single cells, which evolve into unified organisms with highly differentiated and synergistic subsystems, vital to the well-being of the whole. The next natural step in the development of humanity is to become an increasingly cooperative and dynamically integrated superorganism.

This is a deep topic, which we touch upon in this show, and would love your input on this process.. For a little background on this theory, check out: http://www.greattransitionstories.org/wiki/Story:Superorganism

Meanwhile, 3D printers are making headway in the game development world, especially board games, and driverless cars are on a fast track now in California, as well as Nevada.
