Can the Post Office pull itself out of it’s current dive into the dust bin of history? Will Apple’s new 3D TV plans forever change the shape of television? WIll our wallets go away, with the advent of Google Wallet? We delve deeply into these issues, stem cell research updates, and the future of manned space flight in the first half of this episode of Dr. Future.
For the second hour, we are joined by Amara Angelica, a visionary futurist who is co-founder and Editor of KurzweilAI.net and its daily Accelerating Intelligence newsletter. She was editor and researcher for two of Ray Kurzweil’s books, The Singularity Is Nearand Fantastic Voyage, and is Academic Model/Curriculum Lead for Singularity University.

It is a big Dr. Future news week, with Dr. & Mrs. Future and co-host Michael Sigmon. Have you been tracking solar activity lately? Today a comet was consumed by the sun, with nary a CME. And yesterday CME’s reared their massive torsos, flicking their gaseous tongues at us and the rest of their surrounds.
Highlights include an update on solar activity, botnets controlled a toy helicpoter, new nanosensors for fighting cancer, tentacle tech, Tunisian revolution tech and Sponge Bob’s impact on your intelligence.
It’s September, the summer is almost over, but not before we share with you the magic of our Labor Day weekend. At half an hour into the show we have a surprise visit from Agent Nada, who regales us with tales from Harbin Hot Springs and the venerable Women’s Herbal gathering..warning..not for the strictly nerdy…
And geeky we do get, with our analysis of the collaboration between the SFPD and Apple Security over the lost iPhone 5, creating biofuel from organic waste via a fungal enzymes, the significance of the Starz/Netflix divorce, and this week’s cautionary tale- space junk!!
With guest futurist Greg Panos in the studio today, anthing can and will happen. Top of the news is the story of being able to film cops in action in public places, a contentious issue that brings forth the First Amendment. Meanwhile, our Intel agencies are doing their bit to clean up Hurricane Irene, and a new more green method of funerals is being tried in Florida.
Greg delves deeply into the idea of your own evolving personal presence in cyberspace, your “personal personnaform.” To both illustrate and entertain, Dr. Future experiments with a few synthetic voices doing the news.
It’s also the week of Burning Man, and we have a live report from 13-year old Ciaran Farley, his first burn, in the midst of Black Rock City in Nevada. We also hear from John Graham, who is making sure we have a live feed 24/7 from the playa. That and a diamond planet, a UCSC Galaxy Simulator, the biggest data drive ever, and human powered tech, all on the show’s link’s page..
It’s funny how the idea of ‘prediction’ has been so prevalent today. First, was a demo of an alien oracle, recently created by this week’s guest, Santa Cruz’s own iPhone/iPad app developer Mark Buchanon. Then there were the stories, today’s stories, beginning with the use of what’s known as ‘predictive policing’ by the Santa Cruz Police Dept. And there is the National Institutes of Health’s use of new computational software that allows the predicting of new uses for old drugs. And let us not forget Stanford researcher’snew method for predicting dangerous solar flares! All covered in our news segment..
And for the second segment of our show, programmer Mark Buchanon educates us about the entreprenurial opportunies in developing iPhone/iPad apps, a billion dollar industry that did not exist a scant 3 years ago! Oh yes, that er, “Alien Oracle’ app is pretty amazing, based on a visual trinary code, but not quite yet ready for primetime.. soon..

Much has been promised from the world of solar energy, the potential is unbelievable. There is more power in the solar energy hitting the planet every day, for example, than all our reserves of coal and oil. But what has actually been delivered so far, and what can we expect in the near future, given the rapid advance of technology and our will to use it?
Joe Jordan, founder of Sky-Power, has worked at NASA Ames for 20+ years and is very bullish on solar. He is an affiliate of ASES (American Solar Energy Society), NCSEA (Northern California Solar Energy Association), and CARET (Consortium for Advancing Renewable Energy Technologies).
Carl Reuter has a long history in solar, having installed many a backwoods system, long before the recent advent of Grid-tie solar that has brought many young companies to the market. He has been in the solar trenches locally and can give us a very pragmatic perspective of what is real now with solar.

Our guest today invisions a future where we are able to embark on safe, therapeutic, and sacred psychedelic journeys. Here’s what a few sages on the topic have to say about Dr. Fadiman and his new book:
“James Fadiman, one of the foremost pioneers of scientific research of the potential of psychedelic substances for therapy, self-discovery, spiritual quests, and creative problem-solving, has written an invaluable guide for safe and productive sessions. Based on more than forty years of the author’s experience in the field and presented in a clear, easily understandable style, this book is a breath of fresh air, dispelling the mis-information that has been disseminated over many decades by sensation-hunting journalists and fear-based antidrug propaganda. The publication of The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide could not be more timely; it coincides with a major renaissance of interest in psychedelic research worldwide. The information that it provides will thus be useful not only for the hundreds of thousands of people involved in self-experimentation but also for the new generation of psychedelic researchers.”
(Stanislav Grof, M.D., author of LSD: Doorway to the Numinous )
“James Fadiman was the Forrest Gump of the psychedelic sixties. He witnessed the first flowerings of that amazing era of mindexpansion, then kept popping up for cameo appearances whenever the action got particularly interesting and enlightening. Now, riding a new wave of scientific research into the beneficial use of these misunderstood substances, Fadiman is back with a practical and at the same time inspiring guidebook for the next generation of entheogenic explorers.”
(Don Lattin, author of the bestselling The Harvard Psychedelic Club )
“Approaching his subject from intimately historical, psychological-cultural, and accessibly authoritative perspectives, Fadiman’s psychedelic magnum opus establishes the benchmark reference for anyone interested in understanding, experiencing, or supervising the effects of this unique family of psychoactive substances.”
(Rick Strassman, M.D., clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule )

When you think of Magick (with a ‘k’), what images come up for you? Voluptuous scantily clad women on stone altars, summoned demons, and arcane incantations whispered by hooded initiates celebrating a dark mass with symbols scribed in blood?
In this show, we take you beyond Hollywood and comic book graphic novel interpretations of ceremonial magick to the realms of enlightenment, and what can truly be learned and gained from the craft in this day and age.
Lon Milo Duquette was brought up in Nebraska and hippie California during the 1960’s and 70’s, and with a healthy dose of counter cultural exposure, practices various forms of ceremonial magick to this day. DuQuette has written several successful books on Western mystical traditions including; Freemasonry, Tarot, Qabalah, ceremonial magic, the Enochian magic of Dr. John Dee, Aleister Crowley, and spirit evocation, Goetia.
Not content to be a scholar, he has engaged in actual practices of Magick and will give us the real deal on what’s valuable about magick in this age of science, or at least, what is working for him. He is a good speaker, engaging, quite funny, and not a bad folk singer!

Some of the basic precepts of her popular new book, The Watchman’s Rattle, are:
Humankind’s Cultural Complexity is exceeding our biological capability…
Biology evolves slowly compared to our culture and technology.
When complexity makes facts difficult to acquire, we experience ‘Gridlock’..a paralyzed state..
When gridlock happens we resort to beliefs instead of rational solutions and system collapse is often then not far away..
So, the question is, “Can there be a non-doomsday scenario solution for our species and what might that look like?”

Dr. Future 2.22.11 Ted Nelson Listen Now
This week in the future is raging with controversial characters from the past and the future. Today is the anniversary of the birth of Dolly, the first cloned mammal in 1995, who sparked a new debate about the ethics of humans playing GOD with their scientific pursuits. Yet the gifts of the research abound, with discoveries such as new skin for burn victims, driverless cars, robocops and mechanical hummingbirds. With a nod to current events of the day such as Obama’s budget for “Exascale” computing, and the Social computing shoot out in the Google VS Facebook saga, we turn to our excellent guest, inventor Ted Nelson.
For BG, a few lines from Wikipaedia:
Ted Nelson is currently working on a new information structure, ZigZag,[6] which is described on the Xanadu project website. ZigZag is Ted Nelson’s trademark on a data model he has designed for computer interaction, both for users and between programs. The design is centered around an information structure called a zzstructure and its interactive visualizations. Nelson’s stated goal is on one hand a platform for theProject Xanadu hypertext and on the other a complete computing system built on new conventions. Instead of the conventional textual formats and tree structures, zzstructure is a multidimensional extension of a spreadsheet whose cells can contain various kinds of data.
